Worrybirds,
The subject line doesn’t really work, but at least I tried. This week we’re celebrating the King of Whimsy.
For any new subscribers, my name’s Jed and I created the Get Afraid Journal. If you want to get in touch, hit reply.
🕰️ “If you can draw and design it, you can build it.”
Judson Beaumont was a Canadian artist, designer, and craftsman. He created one-of-a-kind sculptural furniture pieces at Straight Line Designs Inc.
Jud passed away suddenly last month at the age of 59. His art lives on in homes, museums, airports, and playgrounds.
I learned of his fearless work posthumously. I think you’ll find it inspiring.
I love it when someone tells me, ‘You cannot build that’ or ‘No one would want that’. These words only encourage me more.
— Judson Beaumont
I don’t know anything about furniture design or woodworking, but I’ve used a few dressers in my day and none of them resembled a little black dress.
Jud created quirky and functional art. Sculptures with working drawers or clocks. Playful curved lines. Melting dressers. A giant clock checking its wristwatch. A doghouse in the shape of a miniature RV trailer. They were like cartoons come to life.
His style was like a mix of Dr. Seuss, Salvador Dalí, Beauty & The Beast, Looney Tunes and Alice in Wonderland.
His constant experimentation reminds me of John Cage.
It’s OK to be an artist. It’s OK to struggle a bit. It’s OK to make a mistake. And find your groove, find your own signature, find your own style…and I’ll always do that.
— Judson Beaumont
He began his career by creating geometric designs with hard-edges. When boredom hit, he started blending curves, whimsy, and art with function.
Bold new work can emerge if you study/practice your craft long enough to develop a foundation for bending the rules.

I’ve been on a horror movie kick the past couple of weekends. The Autopsy of Jane Doe was compact and creepy. I also watched The Witch. I didn’t love it, but I’m not familiar with the fables that inspired it. All I know is there was a mean, mean goat.
See you fearly soon. 🙄
