Worrybirds,
How’ve you been? I’ve just been troubleshooting a broken pc and rewriting my first novel. It would be wonderful to add a few more people to our crew so please share the newsletter with a friend.
For any new subscribers, my name’s Jed and I created the Get Afraid Journal. If you want to get in touch, hit reply.
🥀 Beware Your End of Life Date
When my Chromebook reached its end of life last summer I was dumbfounded. What’s an EOL date?
Apparently, Google supports Chromebooks for 6.5 years, but that’s it. No security updates after that.
Most computers slow down because they can’t keep up with the latest software. I only used my Chromebook for browsing, writing, and connecting to remote machines. Yeah, the device was manufactured in 2013, but it still worked fine. I’m supposed to just throw it away? I had to adapt.
I found a Linux distro called Gallium OS that brought new life to my Chromebook.
I also found a free version of Scrivener writing software for Linux. When National Novel Writing Month rolled around I was ready to go.
Writing the first draft of a novel was ridiculous, but there were pockets of fun. Rogue Logistics is the tale of a warehouse worker trying to survive an absurd drone uprising.
I wouldn’t have stumbled into creating Rogue Logistics if I hadn’t adapted when my Chromebook reached its end of life. Now, I’ve been using it for rewrites.
Should Rob Bot have wheels? How romantic is Moncrief’s love for forklifts? Does the television land in the sink or on someone?
I’ve always thought it would be cool to write a book, but I was too scared. It’s too huge, too complicated, too time-consuming. Scrivener helped me break it down into scenes and daily word targets. Now, I’m halfway through a second draft. I can’t wait to share it with you.
The last couple of months forced the world to adapt. It feels like masks, social-distancing, and plexiglass shields popped up overnight.
When the unknown happens again, how will you adapt?

😀 The Joy Generator
In case you missed it last time, check out my joy generator. Featuring prompts too weird for the Get Afraid Journal. Spread the joy.
I’m making my way through Succession on HBO. What a group of horrible characters. I can’t look away, but I do need a break between episodes to regroup.
If you think I should do a podcast episode about trying to write a novel, let me know.
See you fearly soon. 🙄
